The following colleges have contacted us with new opportunities:
· The Robert C Byrd Institute offers Advanced Manufacturing Technologies and other certification programs.
· Stetson University, in DeLand, FL, offers the J. Ollie Edmunds Distinguished Scholarship Program.
· WV State University partners with the US Department of Agriculture to encourage the study of agriculture, food, natural resource sciences or related disciplines. They offer the USDA/1890 National Scholars Programs.
****EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITY***
Applications for the American Line Builders Joint Apprenticeship and Training Program will open up effective January 3, 2012. See your counselor.
NEW SCHOLARSHIPS HAVE ARRIVED!
· The annual Mensa Scholarship Essay Contest: the Vandalia Mensa awards a $200 scholarship to local winner. Regional and national awards range from $300 - $1000.Entrants are asked to write an essay that concisely presents your academic, vocational and career goals. Applications are available in the counseling center. Entries must be postmarked on or before January 15, 2012.
· Veteran’s dependents and members of the American Legion may be eligible for special scholarships offered by the American Legion. A CD is available in the counseling center to explore the many benefits available to veterans and their families.
· The Reagan Foundation offers scholarships to students who demonstrate exemplary leadership, drive, integrity and citizenship. Visit http://www.reaganfoundation.org/GE-RFScholarships.aspx for an online application.
· The Ayn Rand Institute offers several essay contests. Essays are written on questions about the novels written by Ayn Rand: The Fountainhead, and We the Living. See your English teacher or counselor for guidelines.
· The WV PTA offers $500 scholarships to qualifying seniors who complete an application. The deadline is January 20, 2012. Applications are available in the counseling center.
· The WV Junior Chamber International (Jaycees) offers $1000 grants to college freshmen who are in financial need, and have demonstrated leadership ability. Applications are available in the counseling center. Deadline: January 3.
After January 1, 2012, you and your parents may file your Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). You will need 2011 tax information, including W-2 forms and IRS Tax Form 1040. File online at www.fafsa.ed.gov. In order to sign the FAFSA electronically, you and your parents must apply for a Personal Identification Number (PIN). Apply for your PIN at www.pin.ed.gov.
Promise-eligible students and students who are applying for college scholarships must meet the FAFSA deadline of March 1, 2012.
Need help filing your FAFSA? Sunday, February 12, 2012, is College Goal Sunday. Several sites around the area will have personnel available to answer questions and aid in the FAFSA process.
College Goal Sunday is offered by the College Foundation of West Virginia (CFWV). Go to www.cfwv.com for information.
